Darwin-Katherine Energy Storage System

Solar PV is increasing in the network at a very fast rate. The intermittent nature of solar generation due to cloud cover causes ramping up and down of thermal plant. Sharp changes in load on the network can cause frequency instability, which can lead to load shedding. Relatively large amounts of thermal spinning reserve are currently deployed to counter the solar intermittency and to provide backup for other contingency events. Greater solar PV penetration without technological enablers (e.g. storage) will exacerbate these issues.

The objectives of the Project are therefore to provide

-Contingency & Regulating frequency control ancillary services (FCAS),

-Enable reduction of spinning reserve from gas fired generators,

-Enable further penetration of solar PV on the network,

-Contribute to system inertia

-To displace the operation of a Frame 6B unit in all respects other than provision of energy and

-Enable system strength requirements
