Yirrkala - Supply and Construct Sewer Pump Station & Rising Main Upgrade

Yirrkala is an indigenous community in East Arnhem Shire, Northern Territory Australia. It is located 18km south-east from the large mining town of Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land, and has a population of approximately 990 people (ICEG, 2017). The sewage system at Yirrkala consists of a conventional gravity sewage system serving all housing and community buildings. The community is divided into two catchments with houses on the beach at the northern end of the community draining to Sewage Pump Station 2 (SPS 2). SPS 2 pumps to the SPS1 Catchment gravity sewage system which services most of the community. SPS 1 pumps to the waste stabilization ponds, where treated effluent is discharged to an ephemeral stream east of the ponds. A review of the sewage requirements for Yirrkala revealed a shortfall of the current pumping system to achieve the duty requirements of a 30 year planning horizon in accordance with the ICEG guidelines (2017).
