Prevention and De-Escalation of Challenging Behaviours In Schools Training for a Period of 36 Months
The Department of Education requires a provider to deliver the Prevention and De-escalation of Challenging Behaviours training either in-person or as blended learning (both online and in-person) to a minimum of 55 relevant departmental staff in the initial round of training. The training will need to have an education and child focus.
This training needs to enable departmental staff to deliver a program to school based staff that will equip them to:
- support decision-making capability in relation to managing behaviours
- create co-regulation between adults and children
- understand the rights of everyone in an environment to feel safe in working and learning
- recognise and de-escalate behaviours of concern displayed by children
- recognise the responses in themselves that may both positively and negatively influence a potentially aggressive situation
- understand and recognise when to use non-physical restraint
- understand and recognise safe physical restraint (not causing damage or pain) that emphasises physical restraint as a last resort (for specific staff only)
- understand relevant Australian and Northern Territory legislation and standards including the Education Act, the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007, the Disability Discrimination Act and the Disability Standards for Education
- minimise the risk of liability
The provider is required to record all participation in the training and track trainer licensing throughout the course of the contract. This includes being able to provide a list of departmental trainers and their registration status as well as tracking participation in the training delivered by trainers to school staff as required. The tracking documents will be provided in a format that can be filtered (i.e. Microsoft Excel).
The provider will also offer annual mentoring or a trainer refresher course to maintain and develop the trainers’ skills. They will be available to trainers throughout the contract to answer any ad hoc questions that arise.
The provider will also provide resources such as workbooks for all participants and other resources such as poster kits.
