Darwin - Stuart Highway and Lagoon Road Intersection - Design and Install a Pedestrian Safety Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Treatment
The project requirements include the development, design, supply and install of a customised pedestrian safety ITS treatment at, and including the approaches to, the intersection of Stuart Highway and Lagoon Road in Berrimah. The system is to be a trial project which will include an evaluation into the effectiveness of the treatment.
The objective of this project is to develop a robust ITS solution to improve pedestrian road safety. The ITS solution could be expected to utilise any of the following technological options:
- detection technology for detecting pedestrians and vehicles
- Digital warning signs
- Smart street lights
- Variable speed signs
- Smart delineation and warning devices
- Infrastructure to Vehicle communicating technology
The system should detect pedestrians on the traffic lanes, median, and verge and alert motorists and riders in advance through any, or a combination, of the following:
- lowering speed limits using variable message signs
- digital warning signs
- increasing lighting intensity of street lights
- activating smart delineation and warning devices
- mobile phones or other vehicle-inbuilt technology
The solution needs to be scalable with the potential to be expanded across other sites in the network.
